Description:Mark-release experiments were conducted from September to November 1979 during predischarge conditions, and May to July 1980 during brine discharge, to determine the effect of offshore disposal of brine from the Bryan Mound salt domes near Freeport, Texas on the survival and migration of brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) and white shrimp (Penaeus setiferus). Vinyl streamer tags were used to mark the shrimp. In fall 1979 20,232 juvenile white shrimp were released in West Bay (Galveston) and Matagorda Bay (Port O'Connor); 20,085 adult white shrimp and 7,928 adult brown shrimp were released offshore in the vicinity of the brine diffuser. In spring/summer 1980 20,571 juvenile brown shrimp were released in West Bay and Matagorda Bay and 22,222 adult brown shrimp were released offshore in the vicinity of the brine diffuser.
