Description:This review of the effects of oil and oil spills on Arctic and temperate intertidal and shallow subtidal ecosystems was initiated following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska. This review updates the literature on oil spills because much of the literature on the effects of oil spills on marine communities has not been summarized in one publication. This report includes most of the currently published papers on the effects of oil spills on intertidal and shallow subtidal communities and also includes some of the unpublished reports on the effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill on marine ecosystems.
