Description:Tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings are issued by local offices of the National Weather Service. Routine verification of these warnings is accomplished at the Aviation Weather Center/Storm Prediction Center(AWC/SPC) . This report highlights verification procedures and summarizes national, regional and local verification results for the year 1995. In the past, offices in Southern Region and Central Region have issued most of the warnings and experienced most of the severe local storm events. In 1995, local offices in those two regions accounted for more than 75 percent of the warnings and severe local storm events. National verification scores for 1995 showed a mixed picture. The Probability of Detection increased over 1994, reaching the highest value on record. However, there was a slight increase in the False Alarm Ratio. Together, these trends resulted in a small increase in the Critical Success Index.
