Description:Brazil is one of the world's most important lobster fishing nations. Only Australia and Cuba catch more spiny lobster than Brazil. Most of that catch is Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, although catches of smooth-tailed Caribbean spiny lobster, P. laevicauda, have increased recently. In 1976, Brazilian fishermen caught about 7,000 metric tons (t) of lobster. Conservation measures have included a closed season and an increase in the minimum tail length of harvested lobster. Almost all of the catch is exported; in 1976, over 6,800 t (live weight), valued at more than US$25 million, were sold abroad. These lobster exports are shipped primarily to the United States. Small amounts are also marketed in Western Europe and Japan.
