Description:Contamination of the aquatic environment by chemical pollutants has become a serious environmental problem which is heightened by the fact that a number of these contaminants have been demonstrated to be mutagenic or carcinogenic. This is of concern both from the standpoint of aquatic plant and animal health and of human health and it is, therefore, extremely important to be able to monitor the genetic effects of low level pollutants on marine organisms. One method that has been used recently to assess the effects of mutagenic chemicals on various organisms measures the rate of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE).
