Description:On March 14, 2008, we, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), issued a final environmental assessment (EA) and finding of no significant impact (FONSI) pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) supporting our decision to authorize the states of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington (states) to lethally remove certain California sea lions to reduce pinniped predation on Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed salmon and steelhead (salmonids) below Bonneville Dam in the lower Columbia River. On November 23, 2010, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals instructed the district court of Oregon to vacate NMFS’ authorization and remand the decision to NMFS for further explanation.
