Since 1970 most of the tuna research carried out nationally by the National Marine Fisheries Service, an agency in the U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been centered at the Southwest Fisheries Center, with one major exception. Research on Atlantic blllflshes and bluefln tuna has been conducted at the NMFS Southeast Fisheries Center In Miami, Florida. This year, however, In response to the major changes—social, economic, and political—which have occurred within the tuna industry both In this country and abroad, there has been a realignment of tuna research responsibilities within the NMFS.
