Description:The Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) has annually completed a bottom longline survey in Alaska since 1978. The survey samples demersal waters of the upper continental slope and is primarily designed to assess sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria), although several other groundfish species are caught in significant numbers. In 2018, the 41st annual longline survey sampled stations in the eastern and central Aleutian Islands region and the Gulf of Alaska. The primary objectives of the survey were to determine the relative abundance of sablefish and other groundfish species from catch data, determine the age composition of the sablefish population with otolith collections, and to determine movement patterns of sablefish and a subsample of other groundfish species with tagging operations.
