Description:"On July 15, 2013, NMFS received a petition from WildEarth Guardians to list 81 marine species or subpopulations as endangered or threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The island grouper was one of the species included in this petition. Under the ESA, if a petition is found to present substantial scientific or commercial information that the petitioned action may be warranted, a status review shall be promptly commenced (16 U.S.C. 1533(b)(3)(A)). This document is the ESA status review report for the island grouper, Mycteroperca fusca. The ESA requires that listing determinations be made on the basis of the best scientific and commercial information available, after taking into consideration any efforts by any State or foreign nation, or any political subdivision of a State or foreign nation, to protect the species (16 U.S.C. 1533(b)). After compiling the best available information through April 6, 2015, I completed a thorough review of the biology, population status and future outlook for the island grouper. This document reports the findings of the scientific review as well as the conclusions regarding the extinction risk of the island grouper as a candidate for listing under the ESA. These conclusions are subject to revision should important new information arise in the future.."--Page 7.
