Description:"A baseline environmental characterization of the northern reaches of Bristol Bay, Alaska was conducted using the sediment quality triad approach (sediment chemistry, sediment toxicity, and benthic invertebrate community structure), along with measures of contaminant body burdens and the characterization of parasites and disease in starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus, Pallas, 1788) and rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax, Mitchill, 1814). The study area was subdivided into 6 strata based on geophysical and hydrodynamic patterns (the upper and lower reaches of Nushagak and Kvichak Bays, Dillingham Harbor and the mouth of the Naknek River). Within each stratum, a stratified random sampling approach was used to select sampling sites for surficial sediment"--Executive Summary.
