Description:"This report summarizes historical trends and recent developments for all U.S. fisheries taking marlins (Istiophoridae) in the North Pacific Ocean. Although marlins are targeted and taken incidentally by both commercial and recreational fisheries, only the commercial fisheries are discussed herein. At least five species of marlins are exploited commercially by the U.S. fisheries in the North Pacific Ocean. These include striped marlin (Tetrapturus audax), blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), shortbill spearfish (T. angustirostris), sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus), and black marlin (M. indica). The first two species predominate the commercial landings (tonnage)."--Introduction.
