Description:The Standard Hydrologic Exchange Format (SHEF) is a standardized system of encoding hydrological data transmissions for both manual and automated processing. Features of SHEF include (a) it is readable by both man and machine, (b) a wide variety of parameters and data types are supported, (c) it has flexible time identification, (d) it uses either SI or English units, and (e) it allows flexible use of spaces and comments within the code text to enhance readability. The SHEF code is now being implemented widely in the United States and has demonstrated a broad base of appeal.
