"The Aircraft Integrated Data Systems (AIDS) combined with the Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) constitute a relatively new and valuable source of in situ meteorological data. Details of these systems have been given by Julian and Steinberg (1975), and considerable background on the role of commercial aircraft in global monitoring systems has been given by Steinberg (1973)"--Introduction, part I.
