Description:"In November 1972, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) put into operation a fully global analysis-forecast system employing a Hough function spectral analysis and an 8-layer primitive equation forecast model on a 5° latitude-longitude grid. The analysis forecast set was run twice per day with the 12-hour forecast serving as the first guess for the analysis at the next observation time. The forecast model was described in GARP Publications Series No. 14. Since that time a number of evolutionary changes have taken place in both the analysis system and the forecast model"--Introduction.
