Description:"The following deals with vertical differencing in the [sigma]-system. Certain features of the continuous fluid are retained in the vertical differencing system presented here. In particular, we will deal with the conservation of mass, total energy, and the first and second moments of the potential temperature. Throughout the derivation we have ignored time and horizontal spatial truncation errors. The derivation follows that of Arakawa, but is more directly applicable to the modeling practices in use at the NMC"--Introduction.
