Description:

MPA Federal Advisory Committee's recommendations for a simplified system for categorizing MPAs in the United States, released in response to the Draft Framework for Developing a National System of MPAs. Addresses management criteria that could serve as entry criteria or evaluative criteria for sites admitted to the System; priority conservation objectives under which existing and new areas would be identified over time for natural heritage, cultural heritage, and sustainable production purposes; and a set of user-friendly MPA categories based on site purpose and type of protection. These recommendations were developed in response to the Committee's ad hoc charge from the Departments of Commerce and the Interior delivered at an April 2007 MPA FAC meeting in Arlington, Virginia.
