Description:It is shown that the daily magnetic variation in the polar cap on moderately disturbed days is essentially identical to that of extremely quiet days, but significantly enhanced. On the basis of an extensive analysis of magnetic and auroral records, it is inferred that the particular type pf magnetic variation identified as the DP-2 mode is not a new and distinct variation, but is one of the manifestations of magnetospheric substorms.
