Description:"This report is a history of the U.S. Government's activities in fishery science in Miami, Florida. The objective is to document the growth and development of the federal fisheries research laboratory on Virginia Key established in 1965. The focus is primarily on events in the decades between 1965 and 2005, but it begins by describing earlier local and academic efforts that influenced the choice of Miami as the location for the laboratory. From its early beginnings, the facility has grown to become one of the leading federal fishery science centers in the nation. It was originally named the Tropical Atlantic Biological Laboratory, but it was renamed the Miami Laboratory as it became part of the newly established Southeast Fisheries Center (later renamed the Southeast Fisheries Science Center). The federal investment has produced many noteworthy and outstanding accomplishments over the ensuing years, and since the laboratory has reached its fortieth anniversary, it seems worthwhile to establish a record of the events and people who participated in its establishment and ongoing research programs"--Preface, paragraph 1.
