Description:The Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) regularly monitors the abundance of eastern North Pacific (ENP) gray whales Eschrichtius robustus through shore-based surveys. These visual surveys are conducted along the central California coast between December and February during the whales’ southward migration, and they contribute to a long-term time series of abundance estimates that began in 1967 (Reilly et al. 1983, Laake et al. 2012).
