Description:This report provides an initial accounting of greenhouse gas emissions associated with NOAA Fisheries operations in the Pacific Islands region (PIR)1, focusing on the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) and Pacific Islands Regional Office (PIRO) at the Inouye Regional Center. The intent is to improve understanding of operational energy use and identify potential opportunities for greater efficiency, and in turn emissions reductions, within PIR operational control. For Fiscal Year 2023, total PIR operational emissions are estimated to be the equivalent of 6,557.2 metric tons carbon dioxide (hereafter t CO2e). The largest contributors to this footprint are the use of NOAA ships (39.5% of total) and IRC electricity usage (38.8%), followed by field operations, travel, and commuting.
