Description:Federal and state agencies are working to restore American shad to their historical spawning grounds in the Susquehanna River by stocking hatchery-reared larvae and working with hydro-electric companies to build and operate fish passage facilities. Fish passage at Holtwood Dam, Safe Harbor and York Haven Dams has averaged only 31%, 76% and 17%, respectively, of that at the preceding downstream dam. The net result is that only 4% of the fish which pass Conowingo Dam (the first dam encountered) attain access to the vast spawning areas above York Haven. Clearly, fish passage at Holtwood and York Haven Dams must improve significantly to ensure restoration of a self-sustaining population of American shad to the Susquehanna River.
