Description:A two-part study was initiated by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) in the spring of 2004 to fulfill obligations recommended by Amendment I of the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for American shad and river herring (alewife and blueback herring). The first objective of this study is to characterize the spawning populations of American shad and river herring from seven river systems in Massachusetts. The second objective is to enhance or restore historic anadromous fish runs by stocking pre-spawning adults from healthy runs into runs that have declined or have been depleted.
