Description:NOAA collaborated with the USGS to develop an Implementation Plan1 for the modernization of the System oriented around seven equal priorities, set forth below: 1. Improve service on monitoring and forecasting volcanic smog (vog). 2. Develop/improve an operational plan to warn of volcanic debris flows/lahars from eruptive and non-eruptive events. 3. Improve service on quantifying airborne ash hazards to aviation. 4. Improve service on quantifying ashfall hazards. 5. Improve near-real-time data sharing to improve situational awareness and operational response. 6. Improve service on forecasting volcanogenic tsunamis and submarine eruptions. 7. Improve the efficacy of USGS and NOAA hazard information products. The modernization efforts outlined by NOAA in this plan will play a critical role in envisioning the future System.
