Description:Through use of the Petterssen development equation (Vol lp. 324), forecasters usually expect surface cyclogenesis (development) when an area of upper-level divergence, as implied by Positive Vorticity Advection (PVA) at 500 mb, becomes superimposed on a front. However, the equation also says that surfacе development can occur not only in association with PVA aloft, but also with the proper configurations of instability (S) and diabatic heating (H) fields around a surface Low.
