Description:The Great Lakes Environmental Planning Study has provided an improved understanding of the Great Lakes as a complex ecosystem. The study has stressed the importance of a systems approach for managing the lakes - one that considers the objectives or priorities established for using and protecting them, the alternatives available for meeting those objectives, the costs and expected effects of each alternative on the system, to balance these costs and effects.
