Description:The Department of Geography-Anthropology of the University of Southern Maine conducted the initial phase of the Casco Bay Archaeological Project (CBAP) during 1978–80. The project surveyed some 60 islands in Casco Bay, and identified and documented 150+ archaeological sites through surface survey, sub-surface excavation, and the identification of indicator species, vegetative cover that is indicative of shell deposits. Prince Memorial Library received a Maine Sea Grant Development Fund award in 2023 to re-examine CBAP to document climate-related changes in the marine and coastal environment as evidenced in archaeological samples of Mya arenaria. The end goal is a dated marine oxygen isotope archive for Casco Bay, and a model that can be used in constructing similar archives in other areas of the Gulf of Maine.
