Description:The quasi-geostrophic omega equation, which is well known to forecasters, provides a means of estimating synoptic scale vertical motion. This equation is usually written in a form having two terms, which determine the vertical motion: (1) the vertical derivative of vorticity advection and (2) the Laplacian of thermal advection.
