Description:"Around 2000 UTC 12 July 1996, Hurricane Bertha, a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale (Table 1), made landfall south of Topsail Island, North Carolina (Fig. 1). The eye of Bertha passed within 40 n mi of NWSO MHX, located in Newport, NC, approximately 9 n mi west- northwest of Morehead City. This was the first hurricane to move inland over east-central North Carolina since the NEXRAD Weather Service Office (NWSO) Newport (MHX) and the collocated Doppler radar (KMHX) were put into service in January 1994. A close call occurred in August 1995, when the eye of Hurricane Felix appeared on the radar for two volume scans. The last major hurricane to make direct landfall over North Carolina was Hurricane Donna when her eye crossed Topsail Island in 1960)"--Introduction.
