Description:It is with great pleasure that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) presents this commemorative volume of selected historic illustrations of America's early fisheries. These reproduced plates are from a rare publication, The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States, published one hundred years ago by the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries. The Commission was formed in 1871 as the first federal agency concerned with natural resource conservation. It was the predecessor of today's National Marine Fisheries Service, charged with stewardship of America's living marine resources.
