Description:The distribution of American plaice extends along the Atlantic coast of North America, primarily in the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank. Ocean properties in the Gulf of Maine are highly influenced by the Labrador current, which flows in a general northeast to southwest direction into the Gulf of Maine region (Nye et al. 2010; Brickman et al. 2021). More specifically, sources of water in the Gulf of Maine include the relatively cooler, fresher, surface Scotian Shelf Water which enters via the Nova Scotian Shelf, and warmer, saltier Slope Water that enters the Gulf of Maine at intermediate and greater depths through the Northeast Channel (Townsend et al. 2015; Pettigrew et al. 2005).
