  • Description:
The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series (GOES-R) is the nextgeneration of U.S. geostationary weather satellites. The GOES-R series significantly improvesthe detection and observation of environmental phenomena that directly affect public safety, protection of property and the economic health and prosperity of the United States and allcountries within the Western Hemisphere. Given the real-time or “now-casting” nature of theGOES science gathering mission, any data outage or interruption adversely impacts warningtimes and reduces the scientific fidelity of critical weather products. GOES-R mission levelrequirements limit Key Performance Product (KPP) outages to a total of six hours per year tomaximize science data availability. Lower level requirements limit the cumulative time duringwhich the spacecraft is noncompliant with instrument interface requirements to 120 minutesper year per. These requirements are met using design features of both the satellite andground system, in addition to operational strategies.
