Description:Most electronic monitoring (EM) programs in the United States were developed with a primary focus on objectives related to monitoring target catch and discards of finfish. However, electronic data collection for improving science-based management and for monitoring bycatch of protected species is very possible given the broader capabilities of technology. EM is growing in the U.S. at a modest pace, creating an opportunity to increase collection of critical data types used for estimating bycatch and developing bycatch reduction measures.
