Description:The NMFS Strategic Plan for 2019–2022 identified “increasing U.S. seafood production and reducing the seafood trade deficit” as one of its challenges that must be addressed. The first goal of amplifying “the economic value of commercial and recreational fisheries while ensuring their sustainability,” which includes strategies to enhance both aquaculture and wildcaught production, is justified primarily by a desire to reduce the seafood trade deficit.
