Description:"The Biomedical Test Materials Program was initiated in 1986 by a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/ Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (ADAMHA). The purpose of the program is to facilitate evaluation of the role of omega-3 fatty acids, prevalent in marine fishes, in health and disease. The role of the National Marine Fisheries Service in the program is to produce an analytically well defined and consistent supply of refined fish oil and omega-3 derivatives for use as test materials in biomedical and clinical research. The NIH/ADAMHA provides the review and approval mechanism for the distribution of test materials to researchers who are funded by NIH, or other peer reviewed organizations"--Introduction, paragraph 1.
