Description:Each of the world's oceans is unique in their own way. The narrow, salty Atlantic Ocean stretches from the northern to southern polar regions with major sites of abyssal ocean ventilation that induce global overturning circulation cells. The immense relatively fresh Pacific Ocean is home to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and is linked to the Indian Ocean via the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) within the Maritime Continent. And, then there is the Indian Ocean, which distinguishes itself in part due to the blocking of its northward extent by the Asian landmass, defined by two embayments: the Bay of Bengal (BoB; Fig. 1) and the Arabian Sea (AS). These adjacent seas consist of very different stratification and greatly affect the South Asian monsoon.
