Studies on food habits of migrating northern fur seals traditionally use both percent volume and percent frequency of occurrence (frequency being the numbers of stomachs with a particular food type) to determine the relative important of various species in the diet. The results of both methods are usually presented because there is uncertainty as to which most accurately measures the true diet.
