Description:Over the past 25 years, a unique partnership between the Federal Government and U.S. coastal states and island territories has evolved to help keep the nation’s 95,000 miles of coasts healthy and productive. This voluntary partnership was created under the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 (CZMA). The law is based on the recognition that the coasts are important to the Nation—that coastal resources, such as beaches, coastal wetlands, aquatic species, ports and urban waterfronts are vital to the economic, environmental and social well being of all Americans. To this end, federal and state partners are working with public and private interests along the coast to resolve conflicts and advance the sustainable use of coastal ecosystems. Their objective is to foster economic prosperity while at the same time maintain a healthy coastal environment for future generations.
