Description:AccurateknowledgeofthedistributionofwatervaporinEarth’satmosphereisofcritical importancetobothweatherandclimatestudies.Herewereportonmeasurementsoftotalcolumnwatervapor(TCWV)fromhyperspectralobservationsofnear-infraredreflectedsunlightoverlandandocean surfacesfromtheOrbitingCarbonObservatory-2(OCO-2).Thesemeasurementsareanancillaryproduct oftheretrievalalgorithmusedtomeasureatmosphericcar bondioxideconcentrations,withinformation comingfromthreehighlyresolvedspectralbands.Comparisonstohigh-accuracyvalidationdata,including ground-based GPS and microwave radiometer data, demonstrate that OCO-2 TCWV measurements havemaximumroot-mean-squaredeviationsof0.9–1.3mm.OurresultsindicatethatOCO-2isthefirstspace-basedsensortoaccuratelyandpreciselymeasurethetwomostimportantgreenhousegases,water
