Description:We use a new,well-calibrated 500 year paleorecordoff southern California todetermine collapsefrequency,crosscorrelation,persistence,andreturntimesofexploitedforagefishpopulations.Thepaleorecordshowsthat“collapse”(definedas <10%ofthemeanpeakbiomass)isanormalstaterepeatedly experiencedbynorthernanchovy,Pacifichake,andPacificsardinewhichwerecollapsed29–40%ofthe time,priortocommercialfishingexploitation.Mean( ±SD)persistenceof“fishablebiomass”(definedasone thirdmeanpeakbiomassfromthepaleorecord)was 19±18,15±17,and12±7yearsforanchovy,hake,and sardine.Meanreturntimestothesamebiomasswas8yearsforanchovybut22yearsforsardineandhake.
