Description:During the seasonal evolution of stratification on the New Jersey shelf in the fall, strong thermalstratificationthatwasestablishedintheprecedingsummerisbrokendownthroughwind-drivenprocessesandsurfacecooling.TenyearsofoutputfromaRegionalOceanModelingSystemsrunanda one-dimensionalmixedlayermodelisusedheretoexaminetheinterannualvariabilityinthestrengthof thestratificationandintheprocessesthatreducestr atificationinfall.Ouranalysisshowsthatthestrength ofthestratificationattheendofthesummerisnot correlatedwiththetimingofshelfdestratification. Thisindicatesthatprocessesthatoccurwithinthe fallaremoreimportantforthetimingofstratification breakdownthanaretheinitialfallconditions.Furthermore,wind-drivenprocessesreduceagreaterfractionofthestratificationineachyearthandoesthesurfacecoolingduringthefall.Windsaffectthedensity
