Description:TheextensionoftheERA5reanalysisbackto1950supplementsthepreviously publishedsegmentcovering1979tothepresent.Itfeaturestheassimilationofadditionalconventionalobservations,aswellasimproveduseofearlysatellite data.Thenumberofobservationsassimilatedincreasesfrom53,000perdayin early1950to570,000perdaybytheendof1978.Accordingly,thequalityofthereanalysis improves throughout the period, generally joining seamlessly with thesegmentcovering1979tothepresent.Thefidelityoftheextensionisillus- tratedbytheaccuratedepictionoftheNorthSeastormof1953,andtheeventsleading to the first discovery of sudden stratospheric warmings in 1952.
