Description:DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) may be an old pollutant, but recent scientific findings and media focus have reignited concern about deep ocean DDT contamination in the San Pedro and Santa Monica Basins. This region contains highly productive ecosystems that fall outside of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Montrose Superfund site along the Palos Verde Shelf. New studies have illuminated a broad suite of DDT breakdown products and related byproducts (more than 45 compounds collectively referred to as “DDT+”) that can have toxic effects but have not traditionally been monitored in the environment.
