Description:California Coastal Chinook salmon (CC-Chinook) are listed under the United States Endangered Species Act (Threatened) in 1999 and frequently limit ocean salmon fishery seasons in California and Oregon. Owing to historical and ongoing data deficiencies, a cap on the age-4 ocean harvest rate for Klamath River fall Chinook (KRFC) salmon has been used as a proxy to limit ocean harvest impacts on CC-Chinook. Explorations of the feasibility for developing alternative ocean fishery management strategies were undertaken in 2012 and 2015 (O’Farrell et al., 2012, 2015). Both efforts found that until more comprehensive ocean fishery harvest and spawner escapement data become available for CC-Chinook, few prospects exist for developing a new fishery management strategy. In this report, we re-assess the currently available data and ask whether the data for CC-Chinook are now sufficient to support the development of a new fishery management strategy.
