Description:We began a study in 2005 to document the downstream passage histories of returning PIT-tagged Snake River fall Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha adults, in part to further understand the juvenile life history strategies of passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagged fish that were never detected during their juvenile migration. We analyzed data from adults recaptured at Lower Granite Dam from September to November 1998-2005. Scale samples were read to determine age at ocean entry (subyearling or yearling). Downstream passage histories were determined to the extent possible based on available juvenile PIT-tag detections and age at ocean entry. The effects of age at ocean entry on time spent in seawater and fork length at return were also evaluated.
