Description:This document provides a summary of relevant information for establishing quotas for surfclams and ocean quahogs in federal waters for the year 2001. Staff recommendations are to maintain the status quo levels of 2000 for both the regular ocean quahog and Maine ocean quahog management areas, increase (by 11 %) the surfclam quota from 2.565 million bushels to 2.85 million bushels, and to continue to suspend the minimum size limit for surfclams. If adopted, the increase in the surfclam quota would restore the quota to the level in effect from 1990 (the first year of ITQ management) through 1994.
