Description:That modern industry has resulted in pollution problems of new dimensions with all living organisms constantly being exposed to a variety of contaminants halogenated hydrocarbons, petroleum, toxic heavy metals, radionuclides, heat and nutrients is commonly accepted knowledge. The escape into the atmosphere and entrance into the waterways of only one class of synthetic chemicals, the polychlorinated biphenyls, amounts to thousands of tons a year.
