Description:The primary form of numerical guidance available in Alaska consists of facsimile charts showing numerically analysed and forecast sea level pressure and 500mb maps. While there is considerable emphasis on model output statistics (MOS) in the 48 conterminous states, the emphasis in Alaska is on the facsimile charts. Satellite pictures and locally prepared analyses are the principal tools used to evaluate numerical guidance in Alaska. When it is suspected that numerical guidance will not verify well, the guidance is modified. Generally, modification of guidance involves extrapolating the movement and development of important features on satellite pictures and local analyses.
