Description:Recent success with a three-level, asymmetric hurricane model (Anthes et al. , 1971a) has come, in part, from the utility of a socalled "symmetric analog" (Anthes et al. , 1971b). This three-level, axisymmetric hurricane model is a powerful and economic tool for interpreting the asymmetric model results and for providing guidance in improving the asymmetric model. Because the results from NHRL's seven-level axisymmetric hurricane model (Rosenthal, 1970) are superior to those from the low-resolution symmetric analog, the prime utility of the symmetric analog lies in its economy (45 points cover the computational domain) and its numerical similarity to the asymmetric model.
