Description:With implementation of new systems well underway, the modernization and associated restructuring of the National Weather Service (NWS) is nearing its mid-point. Actual performance of the new systems in an operational environment and initial responses from users of weather services provide a unique opportunity to examine successes and failures and to assess the validity and viability of the modernization plan and the implementation approach. The Secretary of Commerce has decided to take advantage of this opportunity. The Secretary has solicited public comments to identify areas of concern and has already begun an assessment of modernization that will continue throughout fiscal year 1995. The Secretary will use the results of this assessment to determine what mid-course corrections may be necessary.
