Description:Stranded marine mammals have provided essential information about the taxonomy, ecology and biology of many species. In recent decades, stranding response activities have focused on collecting more detailed biological data to further that knowledge as well as to document the diseases and anthropogenic activities impacting them. This effort provides the basis for a relatively low cost, bio-surveillance program. Characterizing regionally specific spatiotemporal stranding patterns is an essential first step to identifying future changes in patterns or anomalous stranding events.
